The Rise of Digital Fashion

Digital fashion is a 3D rendered garment that only exists virtually. Using 3D software, designers can dress avatars in 3D clothing or create overlays on persons or images. This technology has real-world implications.

Digital fashion is a solution to some of the negative environmental impacts caused by the fashion industry, providing a zero-waste solution. For instance, where designers would create over 12 physical samples, 3D samples that can be customized endlessly, serve as a greener and more efficient option.

Another application of digital fashion today is where customers ‘wear’ digital clothing through augmented reality and digitally altered photos. Instead of purchasing a one-time-wear only outfit for pictures, people are now paying for digital clothes to be layered over their pictures for display on their social media platforms.

Surprisingly, digital fashion is more affordable than certain brand name clothing and sells for as low as $20.

Thankfully, using 3D technology, more upcoming designers can showcase their designs without worrying about the huge production costs involved and existing brands can save physical sampling costs by switching to more affordable 3D samples.
