Fashion and Technology - Is the Technology Industry going to be “the future of clothing”?

In recent years, there has certainly been an increase in the integration of technology in the fashion industry. With the introduction of various innovations, such as 3D printed clothes, winter clothing that relies on revolutionary heating technology or even Google glass, there is no doubt that the future of fashion and technology will be somewhat intertwined. However, will technology “eat fashion” in coming years and fulfil the fashion needs of the future, as suggested by some articles?

With space travel becoming a reality, Virgin Galactic -- a spaceflight company -- collaborated with Under Armour -- a sports equipment company -- to create a space wear collection. Instead of partnering with a fashion brand, Virgin Galactic decided to collaborate with a sports equipment company because they are perceived as more user and performance-focused.

On the other hand, there have been numerous instances where fashion and technology have collaborated on successful projects. For instance, Apple and Hermes (a French luxury company) partnered to work on a special Apple Watch model. This model combines the luxurious and aesthetic look that Hermes is known for with Apple’s high-quality technology. This Apple watch model was not simply a practical tech product, but a high-fashion good. Additionally, fashion is becoming more and more user and performance-centric. Thesis Couture, a company offering stilettos, has hired and worked with scientists to create “the world’s first high-performance high heels”.

Therefore, the future would not see fashion or technology compete or win over the other. Fashion and technology would thus work together increasingly to fulfil future fashion needs.
