Reduce, Reuse & Recycle your Clothes!

Within the fashion industry, it is not always glitz and glam. Behind the scenes, there is a really dirty secret. The clothing production industry produces immense amounts of waste. What happens to the clothes that no one wants? Or clothes produced in extreme excess? Or even the clothes taking up space in your closet? They are thrown away and forgotten, piling up in landfills.

On average, a consumer throws away 70 pounds of clothing each year. Across the globe, 13 million tons of textile waste are produced each year. These statistics are extremely frightening when we think about the Earth. As more people are learning about these unfortunate truths, brands are looking for ways to solve these problems.

One way to combat fashion waste has been demonstrated in multiple clothing companies. Many brands such as H&M, Nike, Adidas & Patagonia have featured clothing items that are made from multiple recycled materials. These materials can be made from plastic from oceans, or fabric from other recycled clothing items. Just like how you would reuse your water bottle is the same way that companies reuse fabrics and plastic. These products are still very fashionable and have been shown to be popular among consumers.

Going sustainable is beneficial for both the consumer and the planet. Sustainable products are often higher in quality which is attractive to the consumer. If companies can learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle their clothes, we can begin to heal our planet.
