Innovative Fashion: The T-Shirt That Can Biodegrade in Just 12 Weeks

Vollebak, the company that developed the indestructible jacket, has taken environmental clothing to the next level. In 2019, Vollebak developed a T-shirt that biodegrades in just 12 weeks.

The 100% plant and algae t-shirt looks, feels and lasts as long as a regular T-shirt but the differing factor is how it starts and ends its life. The shirt is built from pulped eucalyptus and beech from sustainably managed forests and algae grown in bioreactors.

So how does it work?

Simply bury the T-shirt in your garden when you feel it has reached its end and it will degrade in 12 weeks turning into worm food.

The shirt currently sells for $110.

Fabric waste is extremely toxic to the environment. Clothing can take decades or centuries to biodegrade but according to Vollebak, β€œthe future of sustainable clothing is likely to be based on the same principle as this T-shirt.”

As more people are becoming environmentally conscious, more fashion brands are embracing sustainability, and this could truly be a solution to some of the negative impacts of traditional fashion practices.
