Females in Fashion Tech

This year alone, we have seen drastic changes in the technology industry. With COVID, of course, we were forced to find new ways to communicate and work virtually instead of in person. This abrupt change influenced lots of people to pursue careers they did not think of before. One of these career fields that really boomed this year was fashion technology. Normally, the fashion industry is dominated by men.

Statistics show that over 40% of womenswear designers are male. You would think that more females would be responsible for designing the clothing that they wear, but that is a conversation for another article. However, this notion is quickly changing. Females are becoming more immersed in fashion technology and making groundbreaking advancements within the field.

As more females are leading the fashion industry, they are seeing great success. It is almost like they are their own audience. One specific fashion technology advancement is the creation of resale clothing sites. An app called Little Black Door, created by Lexi Willetts and Marina Pengilly, allows users to price their clothing, buy and sell clothing as well as create outfits. Women often have piles of clothing sitting in their closets that could be worth a lot of money. This app solves that problem by allowing consumers to digitally organize their closets as well as receive money for the clothes they were not wearing anyway. Clothing value is often underestimated by men which gives women a great advantage in this field.

This app also encourages sustainability by helping to reduce overbuying. Sustainability is an extremely important factor in female consumers and is also valued here at YOC. Females are making impressive progress in fashion technology and are finally getting noticed for it.
